Apple have revealed the Apple iPad. It seems that the rumours were right. Im still puzzled as to what the main function of the iPad is for? To me it looks like an overgrown iPhone. Looks impresive though.
Prices are set at:
16GB –
$499 WI-FI
$629 WI-FI + 3G32GB -
$599 WI-FI
$729 WI-FI + 3G64GB -
$699 WI-FI
$829 WI-FI + 3G
The 16GB seems a reasonable price. The iPad is going to rival most netbooks, with a high probability of dominating the market. I for one would prefer an Apple iPad rather than an eee PC.

If you think its too expensive… fear not! you can get one free from Free Apple iPad They will be up on there and available shortly so dont hang about and sign up for your free ipad (or any other gift) quick!

You can expect Wi-Fi models shipping in late March. 3G models shipping in April. (This is the Apple.com other country’s are awaiting confirmation.)
Thoughts?

Big deal…I’m not sure the niche market for this type of thing will be big enough, but who knows…I have no use for one.
On a vaguely related note, Apple have done the right thing for themselves by not announcing international iPad prices yet, for the pound is tumbling against the dollar in recent weeks (not the Apples UK prices are set on exchange rate alone).
The only thing that sets it apart from any of the dozen or so other tablet pcs that have come out over the years (remember their names? yeah. nobody else does either) is better hardware specs, better price point, and a mac os.
The problem iPAD addresses is the medically-important content in images–the anatomy, radiology findings, and quantitative features, are not recorded in a way that machines can access the information–they are either in graphical overlays or in unconstrained text in the DICOM header.
Apart from the lack of multitasking, it looks fairly impressive. However the general consensus from all my friends and colleagues seems to be ‘well it’s a big iPhone isn’t it?’ I don’ think that Apple have pushed the reason for it enough.
For example, I want one because I’m a med student and it would be well useful to not have to carry around loads of books, and the Kindle simply doesn’t work well enough for me to want it. Granted, I don’t know how well the iPad works yet, but we’ll soon see.
Also will be interesting to see what the UK price ends up being.
